LEVEL UPPER BEGINNER-INTERMEDIATE

DURATION 10 WEEKS

RATIONALE


Students will be introduced to the KLA of TAS through the study of food and nutrition for 3 reasons. They are as follows :

1 ) The vocabulary of food is basic and necessary to all students of all ages and cultural backgrounds. This topic gives students the ability to name and describe the food they wish to buy at school and at the supermarket.

2 ) Basic nutrition is very important for all students to be aware of as they become more independent in what they choose to eat away from home.

3 ) The knowledge of safety in the kitchen and basic food preparation skills, as well as Australian habits ( such as our way of washing and drying dishes ), will prepare them for this subject at highschool.


UNIT OUTCOMES

Students should be able to :

Understand and follow the safety practices in the kitchen

To recognise the importance of hygiene when handling food

To identify and correctly use kitchen utensils

Follow a recipe from listening to instructions

Use correct cooking methods

Work cooperatively as a group

Identify the role of food in our lives

Begin to focus on food as a contributing factor to our health and wellbeing

Define a healthy body

Categorise food into five food groups
